Cartier's Stamp
Stamps are used by governments around the world to commemorate the people, events, landscapes etc of its country. Canada is well-known for its attractive and innovative stamps. In fact, one stamp recently sold for $225,000 !! They are used to tell stories about our pasts, remember our accomplishments, and celebrate our present.
Canada Post Stamp Collection However, governments will generally want to only focus on certain parts of the story. This can occasionally lead to misrepresentations of history that can upset groups within our society because of how we remember. YOUR ASSIGNMENT: In an attempt to present an accurate telling of Canada's past, each group is responsible for creating a stamp to commemorate Jacques Cartier. The stamp will be graded on both its design and its historical accuracy. You can draw the stamp by hand or use a computer/app. You can use you history books, my website and other web-based resources to assure accuracy. See the links below for more resources. Canadian Museum of History Dictionary of Canadian Biographies Each group will also need to hand in a brief written explanation/justification (1-2 paragraphs) about the design of your stamp. This should be written in complete sentences. The drawing of the stamp and its justification needs to be handed in at the BEGINNING of class on ###. You will lose 5% per day if it is handed in late. |
